A signature scent is a fragrance you wear often enough that people associate it with you. It is a reasonable thing to want, and the way most people go about finding one almost guarantees they will not.
The mistake
Looking for something distinctive.
Distinctive is what impresses in a shop and what becomes tiring by the second week. Something you wear four days a week for two years needs to be the opposite: quiet enough that you do not notice you are wearing it, interesting enough that you are pleased when you do.
The fragrances that make good signatures are usually the ones that seem slightly boring on a paper strip.
What to look for instead
It has to survive the fourth hour. Anything that is excellent for twenty minutes and irritating by lunchtime is not a candidate, however good the opening is.
It has to work in a room with other people. Projection that reads as confident in an empty shop reads as inconsiderate in an office or a small restaurant.
It has to work in both seasons, or you need two. Most people need two, and there is nothing wrong with that.
You have to still want it on day five. This is the whole test and it cannot be shortened.
A method that works
Narrow to three. More than that and you will not be able to tell them apart by the end.
Wear one per day, on skin, all day. Do not smell it deliberately. Put it on in the morning and forget about it.
At the end of each day, one line: did you notice it, and were you pleased. Nothing more elaborate.
Then repeat the whole cycle. The second wearing tells you more than the first, because the novelty is gone and what you are left with is whether you actually like it.
How long it takes
Two weeks, if you are honest about it. That feels slow next to buying a bottle in ten minutes, and it is the difference between a bottle you finish and a bottle that sits in a drawer.
When to change it
When you stop noticing it entirely, or when you find yourself reaching past it. Neither is a failure. A signature is not a life sentence, and most people’s changes every few years without any particular drama.
Two rather than one
The idea of a single signature is romantic and impractical for most climates.
Heat speeds evaporation, so a composition balanced for winter arrives all at once in July and can be genuinely too much. Cold suppresses it, so a light summer fragrance can seem to disappear entirely in February.
Two is the realistic number: one denser, one lighter. That is not a failure of commitment, it is a response to a forty degree annual swing.
The adaptation problem
Wear one fragrance daily and within a few weeks you will stop perceiving it. Your nose treats a constant background as no information and filters it out.
The usual response is to apply more, which does not solve it and does mean everyone around you is getting considerably more than they were. This is the single most common cause of someone wearing too much fragrance without knowing it.
Rotating between two prevents it entirely, and has the side effect of making each one enjoyable again on the day you return to it.
Asking someone else
You are the worst judge of your own projection, for the reason above. If you want to know whether you are wearing too much, you have to ask, and you have to ask someone who will actually tell you.
The useful question is not whether they like it. It is whether they noticed it before they were close enough to shake your hand. If the answer is yes, reduce by a spray.
How long to give it
Two weeks of proper testing before committing to a bottle, which sounds excessive next to the ten minutes most purchases take.
Set against a fragrance you will wear several times a week for two years, two weeks is nothing. And it is the difference between a bottle you finish and one that joins the others in the cupboard.
Signature does not mean only
Wearing one fragrance most of the time does not require throwing the others out. It means having a default, which is a different thing.
The default is what you reach for without deciding, on days when there is nothing to decide. Everything else in the cupboard becomes an occasional choice rather than a competing option, and that alone makes the collection easier to live with.
It also removes a small daily decision, which is more of the appeal than people usually admit.
